Screenwriting and Development Course

(Screenwriting and Development Course with Movie executive and screenwriter Amy Dean Kennedy.)
Objective: To provide aspiring screenwriters and filmmakers an extensive crash course in the comprehensive elements of screenwriting and an introduction to the development process all viable Hollywood scripts encounter on their way to the screen. From pitch to final draft, each student will have the unique opportunity to write and develop their own screenplays with a Hollywood executive with the chance of having their projects be exposed to literary managers and production companies. Pre-Requisite: Writing samples will be auditioned Breakdown of Classes: Weekend Workshop (2 Days, July 2nd & 3rd in Atlanta):
- Day 1: A crash course in the comprehensive elements of screenwriting; How to cultivate the Pitch for your idea and How to Pitch to Hollywood executives; Group Brainstorm of story ideas (come prepared!)
- Day 2: Private pitch sessions with feedback; Introduction to the Development process; A send-off to writing your screenplay
Writing Period (6 weekly, half-hour private sessions via Skype or iChat)
- Because one of the most difficult components of writing is the discipline to KEEP WRITING when you are stuck, this class gives the student the opportunity to have a weekly check-in with the instructor while writing to brainstorm, problem-solve, try-out dialog, or iChat their way into the motivation they need to KEEP WRITING!
- This portion of the class will be one-on-one and tailored to each student during the writing period.
Reading/Development Period (2 weeks)
- This period is reserved for the instructor to read the screenplays and complete a comprehensive set of story notes for each script. The notes will be delivered to the writer and a conference set up to go over the story notes and further the development of the screenplay.
- Again, this portion will be one-on-one and tailored for each student
Re-Write Period (2 weekly, half-hour private sessions via Skype or iChat)
- After the development meeting, the writer will be sent off to make adjustments to their scripts based on the story notes. The weekly sessions are provided to help the writer push toward their final draft of a completed, developed screenplay.
Final Weekend: Sept 18th & 19th

- Table read of selected scenes from each script, for an invited audience.
Tuition: $1,250.

BIO: Amy Dean Kennedy is a graduate of the prestigious film school at Florida State University where she wrote and directed the internationally award winning short film, Ethans Tuesday, which went on to be optioned by producers from the Hallmark Hall of Fame to be made into a feature film. While in college, Amy worked as a production assistant on Paramounts The Truman Show on location in Seaside, Florida, then, after graduating from Florida State, relocated to Los Angeles. Amy joined the staff at Jerry Bruckheimer Films in LA, where she got her feet wet in Hollywood by working as an assistant to producer Jerry Bruckheimer on blockbusters such as Armageddon and Enemy of the State. She then became a creative executive for Lary Simpson Productions (a subsidiary of the legendary Simpson/Bruckheimer Film Company, responsible for such hits as Flashdance, Top Gun and Beverly Hills Cop), where she worked her way up to Vice President, acquiring new projects for the company as well as developing and collaborating on projects from the Simpson Bruckheimer library, including Bad Company, starring Chris Rock and Anthony Hopkins for Touchstone Pictures; and Bad Boys 2, starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence for Columbia Pictures. Amy has also developed a television project with First Television for Comedy Central and written several screenplays, which earned her a place in the Writers Guild of America. Currently, Amy is preparing to produce the independent feature Rich Dead White Girl in New York City, starring Atlanta Workshop Players alumni Christine Lakin and Corri English.
